The end of my backpacking adventure

Sunday, September 19: Today’s the big day. I meet up with my Grand Canyon training group for our final test hike. Only those who can finish the 28 miles that the coach has marked will be allowed to attempt the rim-to-rim hike in the Grand Canyon.
I awaken before 5 AM. I need to meet the […]

Random thoughts

The last installment on my solo backpack trip is almost finished and will be posted this weekend. Then I’ll start sharing info on my Grand Canyon extravaganza!
In the meantime, some random thoughts have just seeped out onto the page…

If you’re trying to lose weight truly for your health (and not to fit into a size […]

Grand Canyon Tease

Scroll down for a new installment on my solo backpacking trip. But I couldn’t wait…I had to post a little tease about my Grand Canyon trip. So here’s a picture.

Three reports: The next day

Saturday, September 18: I awaken to a chilly morning, fire up the stove and start a small fire to warm myself. I’m surprised to find myself alone…several times during the night I was awakened by headlights pulling into the trailhead parking lot. It was a Friday night, though, so it may have been local kids […]

The return!

I’m back!
I’m alive. I am a changed person. Seriously. I cannot even begin to describe how emotional this trip was. (Am I becoming a wimp? Everything’s so freakin’ emotional lately. Feh!)
Unpacking. Work tomorrow. I hope to update soon.

Three reports: Part four of part three

On day 2, I awaken before 6 AM. In the cool darkness, I fire up my stove and heat water for coffee and cereal (whole multigrain with dried apples and almonds). It’s cold, so I keep my sleepy cap on (a purple fleece number that has “Lynne” machine embroidered in cursive across the front. Greg […]

Three reports: Part three of part three

Jumping around now, and dumping some of my handwritten notes onto the page in anticipation of my departure and total inability to quickly craft a well-wrought trail report:

My notes reflect that this section of trail — between Timber Creek and 5 mile road — is well used, well maintained and well blazed…but not obtrusively so.
Besides […]

Good luck to those going to Chicago

In less than 3 days, tens of thousands of runners will assemble in Grant Park and toe the line for this year’s running of the Chicago Marathon. Good luck to all who will be there! If this is your first, know this: if you’ve prepared, you will enjoy every single mile. This race is like […]

World, meet my trail

Okay, let’s face facts: I’m not going to have time to finish my last trail report before I leave for the Grand Canyon Friday morning. But I still have much to say!
Please accept this entry for what it is and know that I will continue my trail report upon my return.
Greg and I have adopted […]

I’m impotent…sorta

Used to be, in my younger years, I’d give blood regularly.
Years ago, when I met Greg, moved out here and married him, I talked this needle-phobic man into giving blood. We went together. My blood? Not enough iron, so I couldn’t give.
He’s been giving regularly ever since (more than 2 gallons now) and […]
