My iPod Workout

As I’ve mentioned a bazillion times, I hate treadmills. Unfortunately, they are sometimes the best case scenario for my needs. So I’m always looking for new tricks to get me through a treadmill workout. Here’s what I did yesterday.
I got on the treadmill, 1% grade or higher (as usual).
Fast walk/slow jog first song for warm […]

An easy way to increase fitness

I thought about this today while I was running on the treadmill with my fully loaded race backpack, now working in earnest to prepare myself for my upcoming adventure races.
If you walk or run on a treadmill and you’re doing so for fitness and weight loss (rather than athletic performance), you know you have to […]

What I’m doing with weights

In preparation for my C2C adventure race, I’ve once again changed up the lifting routine. I’ve moved into very light weights/very high reps to help enhance my endurance. I’m leaving little to no rest time between sets to make it aerobic, too. And I’m trying to add in as much balance/coordination/core type work with it […]

Exercises we can’t do without

From the American Council on Fitness (ACE) Web site:
“We asked 17,000 ACE-certified Fitness Professionals to name the one exercise they couldn’t do without.
The overwhelming winner was the multi-purpose squat, which strengthens all of the major muscles of the lower body, including the gluteals, hamstrings, quadriceps and calves.
Here are the rest of the top choices, […]

More about McNaughton, motivation and training

The long-run plan I’m following is here.
Information about McNaughton is here.
Best ultra advice I’ve received to date (from a guy who runs 100s):
Learn to walk fast.
Motivate me:
Endurance is not just the ability to bear
a hard thing, but to turn it into glory.

A quick update

Just a quick note. I promise a longer report to follow (maybe even including photos! Woo hoo!)
I got my first sunburn of the year this weekend! Yeehaww!
I only got in about 40 of my intended 50 miles, but they were good-quality miles. In snow. Sometimes up to my freakin’ knees! That was a workout!
Also, a […]

Training today

Got together with the Grand Canyon group today. Many of the same folks as last year, some new folks, too.
I can’t say enough about how this group energizes me! I ended my workout ready to go, go, go!
It was a beautiful day, sunny and 40-ish. We saw swans and got honked at by geese. And […]

Today’s workouts

lunchtime: 4 miles on the treadmill, with hills
after work: 7 miles in the neighborhood
Tomorrow, lunch: Lift. After lunch is rest and I’m meeting a friend for drinks.

Internal/external cues

I know I’ve talked about this topic before, but every once in awhile it hits you in the face. Our internal images don’t always quite match up with our external images.
It hit me square in the nose today when Greg showed me a pic he took yesterday. In my head, I’m always just “Lynne.” That’s […]

On being flexible — in two ways

Yesterday, I had a client meeting plopped onto my calendar right in the middle of my day…when I usually do my early workout. SUCK! I had a couple of choices: I could get up at 4:30 to workout before work. Or I could do both my early and late workouts after work.
Greg’s on vacation and […]
